What Is Trichology?

Trichology is the science of the hair and scalp.

It focuses on understanding the structure, function, health, and disorders of the hair and scalp. A trichologist assesses concerns such as hair shedding, thinning hair, hair loss, scalp irritation, flaking, itching, inflammation, and changes in hair density or quality.

At Carmen Du Preez Trichology, consultations are designed to look beyond the surface. Hair loss is rarely caused by one factor alone, which is why a detailed assessment is important.

What Does a Trichologist Do?

A trichologist helps assess hair and scalp concerns by looking at the possible factors that may be contributing to the problem.

This may include:

  • Your hair loss pattern

  • The amount and duration of shedding

  • Scalp symptoms such as itching, flaking, redness or tenderness

  • Medical history

  • Medication changes

  • Hormonal changes

  • Stress, illness or surgery

  • Nutrition and lifestyle factors

  • Hair care practices

  • Relevant blood test results where appropriate

  • Trichoscopy findings

The aim is to better understand what may be happening and guide the most appropriate next steps.

When Should You See a Trichologist?

You may benefit from seeing a trichologist if you are experiencing:

  • Ongoing hair shedding

  • Sudden increase in hair fall

  • Thinning hair

  • A widening part line

  • Reduced ponytail thickness

  • Hair loss at the crown or temples

  • Patchy hair loss

  • Itchy, flaky or irritated scalp

  • Scalp redness, burning or tenderness

  • Dandruff that is not improving

  • Hair loss after stress, illness, weight loss, hormonal changes or medication changes

  • Uncertainty about what is causing your hair or scalp concern

Many people try products, supplements, or advice from others before understanding what type of hair loss they are dealing with. However, different types of hair loss have different causes, and what helps one person may not be suitable for another.

A trichology consultation helps you take a more informed approach.

What Hair and Scalp Concerns Can a Trichologist Assess?

Trichologists assess a wide range of hair and scalp concerns, including:

  • Telogen effluvium

  • Excessive hair shedding

  • Female pattern hair loss

  • Male pattern hair loss

  • Menopause-related hair thinning

  • Alopecia areata

  • Traction alopecia

  • Scarring or cicatricial hair loss

  • Itchy scalp

  • Dandruff

  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis

  • Psoriasis affecting the scalp

  • Scalp inflammation or irritation

  • Hair breakage or changes in hair quality

Some concerns may require referral to a GP, dermatologist, or other healthcare professional. Where appropriate, this can be discussed as part of your consultation.

Why Hair Loss Needs a Detailed Assessment

Hair loss can be influenced by many different factors. These may include genetics, hormones, stress, illness, nutritional status, scalp inflammation, medications, weight loss, surgery, autoimmune conditions, or hair care practices.

Because of this, guessing the cause can lead to frustration and wasted time.

For example, hair shedding may occur months after a trigger such as stress, illness, surgery, rapid weight loss, or a medication change. In other cases, thinning may be related to genetic or hormonal factors. Some scalp conditions may also contribute to shedding or discomfort.

This is why identifying the likely cause is an important first step.

What Happens During a Trichology Consultation?

At Carmen Du Preez Trichology, an initial consultation includes a detailed assessment of your hair, scalp, and history.

This may include:

  • A discussion about your hair loss or scalp concern

  • Review of when the concern started and how it has changed

  • Medical, hormonal, lifestyle and nutritional history

  • Discussion of medications, recent illness, stress or major life changes

  • Review of relevant blood test results where appropriate

  • Hair and scalp examination

  • High-magnification trichoscopy to assess the scalp and hair more closely

  • Guidance on possible contributing factors

  • Discussion of suitable next steps

The goal is to provide clarity and direction, rather than relying on guesswork.

What Is Trichoscopy?

Trichoscopy is a non-invasive method of examining the hair and scalp under high magnification.

It allows a closer look at features such as:

  • Hair density

  • Hair shaft variation

  • Scalp condition

  • Scaling or flaking

  • Redness or inflammation

  • Follicular changes

  • Signs that may help differentiate between types of hair loss

Trichoscopy does not replace medical testing or diagnosis where this is required, but it can provide valuable information as part of a trichology assessment.

Is a Trichologist the Same as a Dermatologist?

No. A trichologist and a dermatologist are not the same.

A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specialises in diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. A trichologist specialises in hair and scalp concerns from a trichological perspective.

A trichologist can assess hair and scalp concerns, identify possible contributing factors, provide education and guidance, and recommend when medical referral may be needed.

In some cases, working alongside a GP or dermatologist may be appropriate, especially where medical testing, prescription treatment, biopsy, or diagnosis of a medical condition is required.
