Why Is My Hair Still Shedding If My Blood Tests Are Normal?

It can feel frustrating when you are experiencing ongoing hair shedding, but your blood test results come back as "normal."
The important thing to understand is that "normal" does not always mean optimal for healthy hair growth. Blood test reference ranges are generally designed to help detect disease or significant deficiency, not necessarily to identify whether your body has the ideal internal support for strong hair growth.
What may appear normal from a general health perspective may still not be optimal enough to support healthy hair growth. This is because hair follicles can be sensitive to changes in nutrient levels, hormones, inflammation, stress, and overall internal health.
Other factors such as lifestyle, diet, stress, sleep, recent illness, weight changes, hormonal changes, and certain medications may also play a part in ongoing shedding. This is why it is important to look at the full picture rather than focusing on one blood test result alone.
When certain markers are low, borderline, or not optimal for you, the body may not have enough of the key nutrients, hormonal balance, or internal support needed to keep hair in the active growing phase.
Hair is not essential for survival, so when the body is under stress, depleted, inflamed, hormonally imbalanced, or low in certain nutrients, it may redirect energy toward more important functions. This can cause more hairs to shift into the resting, or telogen, phase earlier than expected. A few months later, this may show up as increased shedding.
This is why booking with a certified trichologist can be helpful. A certified trichologist is trained to look beyond what the eye can see by considering your hair history, shedding pattern, scalp health, lifestyle, symptoms, and relevant blood test markers. Where needed, they may also work alongside your GP to help identify possible contributing factors.
Hair loss is not one-size-fits-all. Understanding the bigger picture is key to knowing what may be contributing to your shedding and what your next steps could be.
If you are experiencing ongoing shedding, a consultation with a certified trichologist can help you better understand what may be happening and guide you toward the most appropriate next steps.
